[Ben]:Tennessee / Indiana reciprocity Discuss This [4 comments so far] View Comments
I finally got a response from the email I sent to ensure IN permits were valid in TN.

Here is my original email along with the response:

To whom it may concern,

I am an Indiana resident with a valid Indiana License to Carry Handgun. I have found conflicting information in my research of whether or not it is legal for me to carry while visiting Tennessee. I note that the website below indicates that there is not a formal reciprocity agreement, however it also appears to state that: "Tennessee now recognizes a facially valid handgun permit, firearms permit, weapons permit, or a license issued by another state according to its terms, and will, therefore, authorize the holder of such out-of-state permit or license to carry a handgun only in the state of Tennessee"
http://www.tn.gov/safety/handgun/reciprocity.htm

Thus, I have the following questions:
1. Does TN recognize a valid Indiana Resident License to Carry Handgun?
2. Do I have a legal duty to notify law enforcement that I am carrying a concealed firearm during a traffic stop or other contact?

Thank you,
Ben Swenson

Ben Swenson:

Your questions on Tennessee Handgun Carry Permits have been forwarded to me for response. Tennessee recognizes a facially valid handgun permit from all 50 states. This means that the date on your permit must be current and if checked through the NCIC computer, your permit is valid. Indiana does not have a formal reciprocity agreement with Tennessee; however, both state recognize each other's handgun permits.

The answer to your second question is "yes". Tennessee law requires that your permit be in your immediate possession at all time when carrying a handgun and you "shall display the permit on demand of a law enforcement officer" [T.C.A. 39-17-1351 (n)(1)]. In addition, Tennessee law enforcement officers are authorized to disarm a permit holder for self protection or the protection of others [T.C.A. 39-17-1351 (t)].

I hope that this information answered your questions. If you have further questions or need additional information, please contact Handgun Permits at (615) 251-****.
